USCIS Silent Update: Meaning, Timestamps and What to Check
On this site, a possible “silent update” is a comparison of the supplied record-update timestamp with reliable dated events. A gap alone does not establish officer review, completed checks or approval.
Official sources and what they support
- USCIS — Case Status Online ↗
Official case-status verification for a receipt; not a specification of account JSON or event codes.
- USCIS — Case Processing Times: how to use the information ↗
Processing-time information and how the receipt-date inquiry tool determines when an inquiry is available.

Which dates should I compare?
The record’s updatedAtTimestamp concerns the case record. An eventTimestamp concerns a supplied event. A createdAtTimestamp can describe the creation of an event record instead. Comparing different date meanings can produce a misleading gap.
Use timestamps with an explicit time zone. The reader normalizes supported times to UTC. A date without a time zone does not support precise elapsed-hour conclusions.
What does a later record update actually show?
It shows that the supplied record date is later than the latest reliable event date in the export. It does not identify the changed field. A single export also cannot prove that its date changed since your previous visit.
Keep an earlier export if you want a before-and-after comparison. New events, changed flags or new notice categories are concrete differences to inspect. Missing rows may reflect an incomplete export rather than an agency deletion.
Does a silent update mean approval is coming?
No such conclusion follows from a timestamp gap alone. The record does not provide the reason for every metadata change, and this tool has no evidence that a gap predicts a decision.
An approval-related document or status must be checked in its own official context. A notification date, an uploaded document and a decision date are not interchangeable.
How do I check a possible silent update?
- Obtain your own case export in your signed-in browser.
- Open the silent-update checker and paste the complete case JSON.
- Read the record timestamp, latest dated event and reliability warnings.
- If available, compare an earlier export of the same case.
- Check official notices and status for any action or decision.
What if the timestamps conflict or are missing?
Treat the result as inconclusive. If the record-update time precedes an event or event dates are missing, the chronology cannot establish a reliable silent-update relationship. Fixing a display format does not create missing evidence.
The checker describes supplied timestamps. It does not monitor USCIS or send notifications when the agency changes your record.
What does a simplified export look like?
Fictional illustration with invented dates. This is not a case record or a guarantee of the current USCIS response format.
